The end of 2019 is nearly here and what a year it has been.\u00a0 We have celebrated our 30th<\/sup> anniversary, launched our new website, supported various charitable events and, of course, continued to provide unbiased, reliable and trusted personal financial and investment advice to all of our clients.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking further\nafield, we\u2019ve had a prorogued Parliament, the country feels divided, there is\nslow economic growth and a General Election is imminent (result unknown at time\nof print)….and we still don\u2019t know what\u2019s happening with Brexit! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whilst uncertainty can create anxiety, our advice has remained the same throughout – \u00a0<\/strong>Brace for Brexit but don\u2019t be tempted to make any rash decisions. It\u2019s important to remember that when the financial landscape changes, to not respond would be a missed opportunity.\u00a0 Whatever the result of the General Election, it is important to maximise your tax free savings, utilise all of your allowances and ensure your investments are positioned for 2020 and beyond.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We suggest taking some time over the festive period to ask yourself the following questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1.Are you maximising your tax free saving allowances<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019ve money to\nsave, but haven\u2019t used up your ISA allowance, make sure you take advantage of\nthis tax-free form of investment.  Equally, ensure you\u2019re making the most\nof allowances on your pension contributions to cut your tax bill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2.  Are you in control of your pension arrangements?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether you\u2019re\nlooking to set up a pension, save money on annual management charges or to\nreduce fees on expensive pension plans, review your current pension\narrangements to see if they\u2019re likely to help you achieve your retirement\ngoals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. When was the last time you reviewed your investments?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Markets have been\nvolatile over the last 12 months. With fast changing political events affecting\nmarkets, it\u2018s imperative that your portfolio and pensions are strategically\ninvested to profit from uncertainty and protect yourself from market shocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Are you prepared for the future?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Safeguard against\nunexpected future events spoiling your final wishes by setting up a trust\nalongside your will.  Trusts come in a variety of forms and can help lower\npotential inheritance tax bills as well as give extra guarantees  that\nloved ones will be looked after. Appoint a lasting power of attorney so loved\nones can act in accordance with your best interests and wishes as they are\nnow.  There are two different lasting powers of attorney to consider \u2013 one\nto look after your health and the other your finances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
