There was a really interesting article in yesterday’s Daily Telegraph on financial fake news and how it threatens our wealth.
Social media channels allow for misleading and wrong information to be posted as ‘comments’ on personal finances. For example, one post on Facebook stated that the Government has been stealing from workplace pensions set up by companies on behalf of their staff. The author also confuses private and the state pension, claiming the latter won’t be paid because the Government is “running out of money”. This post was shared over half a million times.
The spreading of misinformation on pensions and savings risks causing huge damage – people could decide not to save based on fake news that is shared on social media.
